Economy of Kundapura

Boats, paddy, beedi and the Gulf.

The economy of Kundapura rests on the sea and the soil. Fishing and agriculture are the historic mainstays, supplemented by trade, beedi-rolling and — crucially for many families — money sent home by relatives working in the Persian Gulf.

Fishing

Fishing is the defining industry of the coast, centred on the harbour at Gangolli — one of Karnataka's important fishing landing centres. Mechanised and traditional boats bring in mackerel, sardine, seer fish and prawns, supporting boat-owners, crews, traders, ice and cold-storage units and dried-fish makers.

Agriculture

The fertile coastal plain supports intensive rice cultivation, along with coconut, areca nut (betel), cashew and banana. Plantation crops and horticulture are significant, and organic produce from local farms is increasingly marketed directly to consumers.

Traditional industries and trade

Beedi-rolling was historically a major source of household income, especially for women. Kundapura town is a commercial hub for the taluk, with markets, traders and small-scale industry; the medieval trade legacy of Basrur echoes in this mercantile character.

Remittances, education and tourism

Like much of coastal Karnataka, Kundapura sends many workers to the Gulf, and remittances are a vital part of the local economy, visible in housing and education. A strong education sector and growing tourism are emerging pillars.
